It’s present day value is around US $ 40-50.Do not sell it now,retain it for some more time,may be you will get a better offer.

ebay or amazon might be a good place to get the best price or get on the internet and find a Chinese coin dealer and sell it to them

For coins try the ANA (American Numismatic Association) website. They also have a lending library for members.

There is an old numismatic saying, "Buy the book before buying the coin." So a trip to the local book store or library might be a good way to get some information for a beginning collector also.

Most sites are trying to sell you something and the ones that have information are usually not free. I started collecting coins 46 years ago and went to my friendly neighborhood coin dealer. There are still some around. See if you can find one near you. Buying and selling coins on the web can be a nightmare. I have just started to use Yahoo auctions and have found that I am not well treated. They either think I won’t pay and have a nasty ending to their you won email or refuse my bid for I am new at it and don’t have any buying rating. It sure sound un- American or illegal to me. There is nothing like talking to a dealer and actually seeing the coins not a photo. A dealer and be very helpful and most that have stores and have been around a few years are very honest. As for sport cards I collect basketball and only the players I like. The market kind of fell out of cards so it is best to just do it for fun. You should also take that attitude when collecting coins. I did and have done quite well even though I didn’t collect for profit. Here are two software download links however I do not know if they are any good. Another option is the third link where you can register and track your coins in the website database of world coins. I hope that helps.

Take it to a coin dealer. You’re not going to find any info for that online. It depends not only on the age of the coin but on the condition. A dealer needs to see it. Crack open the Yellow Pages and search for coin dealers in your area.

I’m pretty sure the face value.
The coin I believe you have is a bicentennial Commemorative coin. It was not made in 1776, that date refers to when the U.S. government as we know it was formed.

If it is gold, it definitly is a commemorative coin, if it is not, it could be part of a limited addition batch made in 1976

Usually the San Francisco mint made less then the other mints. So S mint marked coins are scarcer. This is not always true, for some issues of the Denver mint are scarce also. I won’t get into the New Orleans mint or Carson City, for they were closed CC-1893 & O-1909. Collectors also have this thing about the Granite Lady (San Francisco mint)
