I think this movement in particular is what makes this Tchaikovsky's greatest work (although the other movements are also brilliant). It's obviously incredibly heartfelt and full of emotion, but what sets it apart for me is that this movement just evolves so organically. Perfectly sequenced and structured, no artificiality.

@PIanoReview I don't think the performances are rarely spectacular since karajan but they are more cultered. Tschaikowsky may have thought of such a sound not of a brass sound that kills your ears. I think Ozawa creats a very living and touching version of the peace. I nevertheless fall in love with the version of Norrington and the RSO Stuttgart. In Summer I will play that piece @ first trumpet.

While Ozawa may be one of the most giften conductors, his interpretations are hardly memorable. It's hard to think of a single performance of his that is a reference standard. Here, the section from 3:40 onwards as the orchestra is supposed to come to life is all chopped up and recessed. The brass is hardly what one would expect from Karajan's performances with Berlin. Since Karajan, the orchestra may still be wonderful, but it's performances are rarely spectacular.

Let's put it this way -- BPO is oustanding in each and every respect and there is no orchestra that is better. But thanks I god we do not have to choose between BPO and other magical orchestras such as Vienna Philharmonic or the Concertegbebouw, or, on their day, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Philharmonic or the Staatskapelle Dresden.

I wound rather watch a pianist like lang lang than a stone-faced pianist anyday. This piece of chopin really brings sorrow and profound sadness. I agree with some of the more recent of comments. If we only heard his playing and never saw him, there would be far less criticism out there regarding his playing. The guy is over the top some time, but if you listen you can tell that he has a real ear and he really makes the piano sing. I mean his Brahms intermezzi are just gorgeous.

Why are so many classical musicians so up with themselves in regards to lang lang? This is a cliche, but if you really detest him so much why don't you go and tell him face to face rather than pointlessly complaining 24/7 on youtube about his playing. Anyway, he's a decent pianist; not saying he's the best, but he's decent and he evidently possesses alot of emotion and also quite a uniquely adventurous style which, personally, I do not see a problem with.

yeah. . the thing about YM's classical work is that the guitar and other elements of the rock band are integrated within each other. Malmsteen,( whose #1 influence was Blackmore, by the way) a classically trained artist, scored his work as intricately as Mozart or Vivaldi and presented a truly classical piece with the guitar , as you said, 'violining'. Where as here there is a deliberate counterpoint and conflict; 'call-n-sponse' 'tween group and orchestra. The conflict is never resolved

No. it is deliberate. As stated on the liner notes of the album and in numerous interviews since, the effect Jon was looking for was the conflist between 'classical' and 'rock' , not necessarily any resolution to that conflict. So, naturally, the organ , which is part of the 'group', is going to always have the 'rock' sound. That's playing.. How 'bout composition? The entire project was composed and scored by Jon.

This crossover does what it says on the box; a concerto for group and orchestra. The Nice did something similar the same year - Five Bridges. This vehicle pretends to be nothing beyond what you get, title and song naming-wise. That's why I love it and think it a very good attempt in this sort of genre. I think it's because it's Deep Purple that some folk really won't allow for it. They miss the point and miss out.

...no other rock instruments, and both are playing classically arranged music, and performed by classical rules, not by rock rules, like I said, no jamming. Yngwie wrote every piece and performs it in conjunction with the orchestra, not: "you play, then we play..." and not to simply have the orchestra as pseudo-cerebral backdrop to the band.

This is the 2nd of vids of this concerto taken and posted. The band isn't playing anything remotely classical and the orchestra isn't playing anything rock'n'roll, why are they together?--(rhetorical.) The orchestra plays a bit, stops, and band jams then, yet they dont sound relative....if someone hadn't commented poorly about Yngwie on the other video, I wouldn't even mention it in this one, but, Yngwie's Concerto is the real deal: he is the solo instrument as say a violinist. No jamming.

Don't forget this is some high-quality rock. It's not every band that plays and compose for orchestra, or that have Blackmore and Lord. There are some great bands ok, but rock, as every style, has got a rubbish side.

fabulous performance - I absolutely love Ozawa. I heard him many times conduct the Toronto Symphony as music director back in the late 60's early 70's. The music - its great - but near the end of the scherzo it almost sounds like John Phillips Sousa or something - oh well I love it anyway

I don't know about anyone else, but right after the second subject's climax, starting around 7:10, the dialogue between the violins and the celli, that has to be one of the most beautiful passages Tchaikovsky ever wrote. Lovely, almost painful.

Fabulous. A discovery. I always knew Ozawa was a great conductor, in particular for colorful large-scale late 19th century and early 20st century scores (my favorite Firebird recording, for example, is with none other than him and the Boston Symphony). And with the Berlin Philharmonics he has the greatest, most flexible and competent tool in his hands that a conductor can wish for. But that all comes togehter like this is still a surprise. I wish I had been in this concert.

Actually, the very first premiere of this piece was very discouraging. The audience did not understand the work and the musicians showed lack of interest. Nine days later, Tchaikovsky died of "cholera". It was only the second performance of the work after the composer's death did the audience finally responded with excitement and appreciation.

No one knows what the symphony is about.... Tchaikovsky even wrote that he would let everyone wonder and guess why he had composed this in the first place. At the premiere everyone was close to tears, according to what I heard on the radio.

Tchaikovsky's life had been a constant struggle, a struggle for love, a struggle within the confines of his homosexuality, a struggle to make his unique voice heard in the way he wanted it. I think finally, if he saw how famous he is today, he would be satisfied with his life's work, thinking of the 'nutcracker' here and the '1812.' But the ending to this is more important, to me, because it shows the very essence of how he inteded to show himself as in his last symphonic work.

Extraordinary! the best Pathetique ever performed. Every beat has meaning and is perfectly attuned to Tchaikovsky's composition. Bravo Maestro Ozawa. Bravo the BPO. This is an unmatched performence! And yes, the Pathetique captures the soul,? the essence of life and the inevitability of death. The "heartbeat" motif in the 1st and 4th movements, the slow and painful ebbing of a heartbeat in the finale , and the final plunge into despair . That is all you hear and that is all you feel.

Many people deny the existence of a soul, much less that a non-living object or concept could contain one, but somehow I think that the greater pieces have a soul..and are in a way, a moving, breathing entity. The 6th is one of those undoubtedly, many exclaiming that it captures the complete essence of life It was written as a programmatic piece, but Tchaikovsky when pushed to explain the piece, refused to elaborate, only saying that it was "impossible to put into words." God, it's beautiful.

I cried after watching this DVD. it's such a very rare, hidden gem, to be able to find the DVD in my country (Indonesia)! I've always been a fan of Joe Hisaishi, ever since I've watched all the Ghibli anime series. but after watching this Dream World performance,...my heart is just soo full of untold beautiful, moving emotions, the only thing that only GREAT music can invoke!

@Orlymusicboy well when i was in the 7th grade I heard a recording of Summon the Heroes by John Williams with the Boston Pops Orchestra. In it is an incredible trumpet solo, and I wanted to know who played it. I did some research aka google, and found out who it was. I wanted to find more recordings of him so I checked youtube first and this video came up. He has an album called After Hours, and it's all easy listening. Check it out.
